Global Research & Development

Astellas established its global development headquarters, Astellas Pharma Global Development, Inc. (APGD), in April 2008 in Deerfield, Illinois, US. In addition to its US headquarters, APGD has sites in Japan and Europe.

The European site (APGD-EU) is located in Leiderdorp, The Netherlands. It has global responsibility for the following Therapeutic Areas (TAs): Urology, Diabetes/Metabolism/Cardiovascular, and Pain. The TAs are led by Global TA Heads. Cross-functional project teams are in place, headed by a Global Development Project Leader, to reinforce efficient and effective product development.

APGD-EU also fully supports projects in its Global TAs located in the US, ie, Transplantation, Inflammation/Immunology (including Gastrointestinal Diseases), CNS, Infectious Diseases, and Oncology.

APGD-EU has a broad spectrum of departments covering a wide range of R&D disciplines, including: Project Management; Exploratory Development; Clinical Data Science; Medical Science & Clinical Development; Drug Safety and Pharmacovigilance; and Regulatory Affairs. Members of these departments are generally represented in the Global Project Teams. Close links also exist with TSCM for Pharmaceutical Development.

Globally, Astellas has 30 major projects in Phase 3 or pending approval, and more than 50 projects in early-phase clinical development.
